Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

 I was very active as a kid and young adult, Ballet for 10 years, cheerleading for 2, horseback riding for 4, but my favorite and most time consuming sport was Softball. I played for 6 years and had the privilege of being on an All Star traveling team for our local area for the state of VA. I also got back into softball in my early 20s with the 14th ASOS team, The Lady ROMADs ( air force affiliated). I never actually “worked out” until I stopped all the sports activities and then I mostly did cardio on a dreadmill.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit?

 My husband has been doing CF on and off since about 2003 when it was brand new and had tried for our entire marriage (7 years) to get me to try it. Of course, knowing nothing about CrossFit, I assumed I would puke, look like a man (think extreme female body building), cry, suck and be made fun of, or some combination of the above. With that being said, I always refused his offer to show me what CrossFit was. Then, I kept reading about it, and seeing articles, hearing friends talk etc and FINALLY decided to give it a try because I was a new mom and unfortunately, like a lot of new mothers, I hated my post baby body. I was desperate to get in shape and starving myself + running wasn’t working…

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/ after)?

The results have been awesome! I really had to stop focusing on my actual weight and look at my body composition but, with that being said, I did lose about 12-15 lbs total. My body fat went down almost 10%, and I FEEL amazing! I am so much stronger now than I have EVER been and I can do things I never thought I could before. I have so much more confidence in myself and my ability to do work. It reminds me very much of the time I spent playing sports and being part of a team.  I look forward to the challenge of the next WOD instead of dreading every second of being on an elliptical or treadmill. I have so much more motivation to get in there and improve myself as a whole! Looking better is now just the icing on the cake for me.

 

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

I expected to get in better shape, I figured I might get stronger, but I never expected to meet so many people that I now consider my family and feel like I am part of something awesome. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do. I never talked about going to the gym. Ever. Now my Facebook friends probably know all my PRs. I also didn’t expect for friends back home to contact me and tell me I was now an inspiration to them to try something new and to set fitness goals. That was huge. I just don’t view myself as a “fit girl” and I feel so humbled to have made that difference for someone else when I was really just in it for the bikini body in the beginning.

Why Kaizen CrossFit?

I was not getting the coaching I needed as a brand new and very inexperienced CrossFitter at my previous place. Not a bad place, just a new place that was still working out the kinks. Josh was already a member at Kaizen and gave me the best Christmas present of all, an appointment to redo the baseline and a membership with Kaizen.

Any advice for people just getting started?

DO NOT assume anything. Go see for yourself. I’m sure everyone says this, but it is true. Be prepared to be frustrated. You will have to learn things that will make no sense at first until you have that “lightbulb” moment and seeing it all come together. Don’t delay doing it because you “need to be in shape first”. I did this, and regret it! I wasted valuable time doing nothing worth my time!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit:

I  REALLY enjoy shopping. I may have an addiction to cosmetics. I am a pretty damn good cook and over the past year and a half have become fairly good at Paleo cooking. I have been a nurse for 5 years and have a special interest in Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Triage, which is where most of my experience lies. I hope to go back to school soon and get my MSN and become a NP. In my free time, if I have any, I enjoy playing with my 2 kids and husband outdoors, traveling. I love anything beach related. I am a big fan of Drag Racing and Mustangs.
